This week the EMC welcomed our third session for our Summer Experience! We hosted folks from the Diocese of Arkansas, St. John the Evangelist in Duxbury, MA, St. Elizabeth's in Ridgewood, NJ, and St. Mary's in Arlington, VA.
With 41 youth and 11 adult leaders, Session III is our largest group yet at the EMC. While missioners were getting to know Philly through quizzo, walking tours, and In This City, they were also getting to know each other. Over this week our four groups came together to create their own community within the community of Germantown. While they wrestled with hard realities and the frustrating limitations that are part of mission work, they embraced these challenges and supported each other throughout the week.
This week also marked the first week this summer of EMC missioners working with City Camp, spending the day with campers at St. Luke's, St. Gabriel's, and St. Simon the Cyrenian. We made bracelets out of pipe cleaners and beads, we played musical chairs, and we splashed around at the pool. We built and painted raised beds for gardening at St. Luke's and raised a tent so campers would have a shady area to enjoy their lunches outside. On a more sobering afternoon on Thursday, a number of missioners and leaders attended a nearby vigil for a 13-year-old boy named Chris was killed earlier in the week while playing with a gun.
These incredible youth brought so many unique gifts and insights to the EMC this week, and we eagerly wait to see how they continue living missionally beyond this week!
