This week the EMC kicked off our EMC Summer Experience!
We welcomed the folks of Church of Our Savior (#thePhillyCOOSsteaks) from Charlottesville, VA. These 23 youth and 5 adult leaders came to the EMC ready for a week of missional living.
They started on Sunday, getting to to know our team and Philly through icebreakers and activities, including Philly Quizzo. They also opened themselves to some of the harder information about Philly through an EMC-created experience called "In This City." ITC is a story driven activity that uses Philly statistics on housing, education, gender, race, transit, gun violence, and income to demonstrate how people are differently affected by systems in our society.
We spent the rest of the week working in shared service with many of our service site partners, including Awbury Arboretum, Aid for Friends, Church of the Advocate, Education Works, Face to Face, Grumblethorpe, Heeding God's Call, SHARE Food Program, St. James School, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and St. Simon the Cyrenian Episcopal Church. We painted walls and served meals. We conquered fields of bamboo and enjoyed recess with the students of St. James School. We gathered together at compline to pray for Orlando, and then we prayed with our feet by passing out flyers to our Philly neighbors about an upcoming rally to address gun violence.
The COOS community brought so many gifts to the EMC this week. Journeying with them was a blessing and we cannot wait to see how they continue missional living once they return home!
